Truro Squash club was extremely well represented at the England Masters Squash Championships held at the amazing Winchester Racquets and fitness centre in late January.
New out of county member Roger More contested the 065s category, Dave Mathew (County 060 champ) played in the 060s division and Tim Smith (050 County champ) in the 050s section. This most pretigious event attracted nearly 200 of the best age group Squash players in Britain and was particularly hard fought as it served as the penultimate qualifier for international team selection.
Complete in Truro team kit while playing on the National stage, incredibly all three players won their respective plate competitions and therefore took 9th place each in the championships. Roger came from 2 games down to beat his opponent Jack Halford, who interestingly has just bought a house himself in Cornwall, to win his title in dramatic style. Dave was simply too strong and very classy against his rival Mike Dyer winning through in straight games in absolutely fine style. Finally Tim had a massive tussle with England no 12 Nigel Bacon and eventually got his man 3/1 to take one of the best wins of his Squash career to date.
The same trio along with Tony Bowyer, Jon Wills and our 045 County Champ Neil Counter recently represented Truro and Cornwall in the biggest event of all, the British National Squash Championships at the National Squash Centre in Manchester and full updates of their progress will be provided…. C’mon team Truro!!!!!
