The week of 14th to 20th of April saw the top 32 squash players in Truro compete for the title of Truro’s No 1 player over a gruelling 6 day competitive period at the Truro Squash and Racketball club.
The large crowds and remarkably warm spring weather created seering temperatures on court throughout the period which culminated in a thrilling finals evening, packed with action, drama and passion.
Continuing the rise of the Club’s immense pool of junior talent, the plate final was fought between Ben Angilley (15) and Tom Newberry (17) who have both developed extremely quickly over the last few months and compete successful at full adult level on a regular basis in the County leagues. In a close 4 set encounter Ben just got the better of his counterpart with a touch more consistency on the big points to lift the Plate title and take the spoils.
The 3rd place playoff was between former champions Neil Counter and Tim Smith who duelled for a massive 80 mins in a five set thriller which went down to the very last point. Neil emerged victor 17/15 in the final set in a highly entertaining and extremely physical battle. Both players are now well into their 40’s but play is if they are 20 years younger.
In the main final, Truro and indeed Cornwall’s top 2 players took to the court for another compelling encounter and a repeat of the Cornwall County final itself. Jared London (19) and Rory Brickell (24) are the pride of Truro and the whole County and once again displayed their amazing skills, speed and agility to the enthralled audience. Jared triumphed in a hard fought 3 set win and has now achieved the distinction of holding the Truro title, Cornwall title and National Colleges title in the same season which is a feat that has never been achieved before.
The award for the most improved player went to Zefran Counter (15) who reached the quarter finals of the championships and was also the chief organiser of the event. Zefran plays for the Truro 1st team which has just secured the County league title and he is also destined to reach the top ranks of Cornwall individual squash over the next few years.
The organisers would like to thank the event sponsors, Hardy Carpets for their amazing support of the sport of Squash, and the lovely Clare for all her catering and bar expertise!
